New piece of software to avoid: Akregator.

I used Akregator for my RSS reader, right up until about 10 minutes ago, when hotplugging a drive (yes, in a hot-plug port.) caused the PC to reset. Upon starting, I made the delightful discovery that Akregator had eaten the feeds.opml file (Where my rss feed links are kept.).

This annoyed me greatly, but I reasoned that there must be a backup file in the folder, just in case. Indeed there was. It was also empty. Nicely done, Akregator. Sure, a hardware level reset is not something you can catch in software, but I would have expected that it would do the following on updating the feeds file:

  1. Make backup copy of feeds.opml
  2. Compare backup copy with master, if it doesn't match: Stop right here!!
  3. Update master copy

If the "Update master copy" task never completes, then I would expect the following to happen on restarting the software:

  1. Detect that master copy is corrupt
  2. Error, ask the user if they want to restore the most recent backup
  3. If yes, restore backup
  4. Resume as before

Thankyou, Akregator, for working so nicely so far. But this is a bit much. I've now got to hunt down all my RSS feeds again.
