Wheels!

A little before afternoon brew at work, a pallet turned up. Wonder what it could be?

A pair of wheels, stacked on top of eachother on a pallet, all wrapped in shrink-wrap

Looking down through the top of the wheel stack, at the wheel flange with its countersunk bolt-holes

Mmmmmmmm...

After finishing out the rest of the day, and rushing down to the unit, let's try them out!

So, we start with the skinny little 6" split-rim (for the 9.00-20)

Comparing the 9.00-20 tyre against the modern wheel-rim, which is about an inch wider

Moment of truth...

The shiny new wheel rim bolted up onto the truck

IT ONLY GOES AND FITS!

Plenty of clearance there! Admittedly, this is with the 25mm wheel-spacer that was fitted so they could use the same dually wheel-stud front and rear; without the spacer, I think I'd be in trouble.

Details as follows: 9.00x22.5 10 Stud 1" BSF 281/335/120HDS, WheelMasters p/n 220898/1

That is, they're a 10-stud 9.00x22.5, countersunk for 1" BSF, 281mm centre bore, 335mm PCD, +106mm offset (120mm Half-Dual Spacing), and a 14mm nave plate.

The nave plate is 2mm thicker than the wheel I'm replacing, and they have 4mm less offset. In the grand scheme of things, not a big difference.

Basically, they've taken a stock wheel, which has 26mm flat-faced spigot wheel nuts, and countersunk them for the conical wheel nuts; and I don't think those pretty minor differences warranted going to the extra expense to match the original exactly. At time of writing this, I paid about £160 plus VAT per wheel.

So with it confirmed -- with me own two eyes -- that these fit, I can put tyres on the list ...and also start saving for a second pair of these wheels! (Well, eventually I'll want a total of 5; but the lack of a spare isn't a pressing issue at current!)

Now, I'm pretty sure I'll want rid of the silver, but I'm not entirely sure what route I want to take on that front, yet. I think fully-yellow would be a bit too much yellow in one place; but on the other hand, a I think black would just make them disappear into the already large wheel arches. Perhaps gloss black, with a yellow pinstripe around the outside?

As for tyre tread pattern, I'm thinking along the lines of the Bridgestone M+S drive pattern. Chunky, and open-shoulder. Work use them a fair bit, (it's what's across the back of that big Volvo rotator) so availability is pretty good, and it fits the vibe. Also should be at least not totally useless if I take it on a bit of wet grass...
